Making Matchboxes from Scratch

I've been in at least ten swaps of decorated and filled matchboxes. I know ten, because I bought a ten-pack of small matchboxes aw Wal-Mart and used them up--except for the wooden matches which I put in a jar, waiting for something creative besides using them to start our outdoor fireplace.

32 ct matchboxes are a commonly available item most everywhere. You can buy a ten-pack of them at your local Big Box discount store for less than a dollar. Then, use or throw out the matches and make art with the little boxes!

I decided to take one apart and make a template so I could make my own out of sturdy cardstock as I need them for various creative endeavors. If you just can't find enough matchboxes to buy, you can also make them from heavy cardstock and good tacky glue, using patterns like these:

fold on the lines and glue the edges together overlapping. I use small clamps to keep the pieces together for a good seal. The insert box is folded up along the 4"sides first, then the tabs tucked in and the endflaps fold over them and are glued down and clamped to hold it firmly in place.

You can use decorated cardstock to cut the patterns from, either hand drawn or painted, or digitally created patterns like these (click on the thumbnail for a full size printable page) :
